Recurring tournaments and cups in Istanbul 6

Istanbul’s big events are tied to the calendar. Around Republic Day at the end of October, district municipalities hold Cumhuriyet cups: Sarıyer with the Zekeriyaköy club, rated by UKD and with a published prize fund, and Küçükçekmece at its Yahya Kemal Beyatlı performance centre. In January the Eyüboğlu schools gather a very large field at their Çamlıca campus in Ümraniye for the Beyaz Fil international tournament, and in late summer the International Istanbul Open fills a hall in Sultangazi with players from many countries.

Other tournaments belong to an institution: the Istanbul Bar Association has its own numbered tournament, and Beyoğlu municipality marks World Chess Day at its science centre.
